Released on December 8, 2022, the 16-bit style RPG takes the typical classic turn based combat format, but instead of random encounters the game shows approaching enemies on the map similar to Chrono Trigger. Created by Matthias Linda, the game was inspired by classic RPGs such as Xenogears, Terranigma, Secret of Mana, Suikoden 2, and others. Deck 13’s Chained Echoes quickly gained a reputation as a game that old-school RPG fans should play and has reviewed well on all its platforms.

One of the game’s developers has recently announced via Chained Echoes’ Discord channel that the game is soon to receive a major update. Patch version 1.06 is set to fix some bugs such as reload errors in Fydolin’s home, a black screen that appeared when a corrupted save file was present, a bug that made it possible to skip a certain battle, a bug that caused a Fire Attack passive ability to trigger too much, among a few other smaller fixes. Even with the high praise, Chained Echoes has seen some game breaking bugs that had thankfully been addressed in the 1.05 patch.
In the announcement, the developer also makes mention of patch version 1.1 which is set to bring Japanese language support among other further fixes. But perhaps the most enticing addition will be added in the patch after that, as the post also slates that upcoming patch to include New Game+. As yet it is unclear what the New Game+ mode will include, but for games with a replayability factor such as Chained Echoes, the game mode is a must especially to go back to the game with insight and tips such as how to use SP in Chained Echoes or even just to enjoy reliving the story again.
New Game+ should also tide RPG fans over until the release of Final Fantasy 16 in June this year. While Final Fantasy 15 was met with somewhat of a mixed reception due to part of the story being withheld in a separate movie, and the minimal character roster, excitement for Final Fantasy 16 is still quite high. Hopefully Chained Echoes’ additions will continue even beyond that, especially if Final Fantasy 16 sees a similar fate to that of the confusing Stranger of Paradise which received mixed reception.
Chained Echoes is available now for PC, Microsoft Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Sony PlayStation 4, and macOS.
