Without spoiling anything, this becomes clear in episode nine. Makima is not one to be trifled with, and it only gets more explicit past season one of Chainsaw Man. Season three, if the anime ever gets there, is going to be intense. Now, Makima is not all beast as she does have some profound and funny lines in the anime. There will be spoilers in the search ahead for the best ones.

Spoilers Ahead

7 “So Then, This Your Handiwork?”

The first episode of Chainsaw Man has to be one of the greatest openers to an anime. It ends with a massive fight against zombies and it’s a bloody battle too after Denji transforms into the titular Chainsaw Man for the first time after he merges with his partner Pochita.

After Denji rocks this warehouse, Makima shows up with two agents to check on the situation. She looks around, admires Denji’s handiwork, and asks this question as if she doesn’t already know. At this point, Makima is shown as a less harmless female character, but this was probably done to catch viewers off their guard.

6 “Currently I’m Into Denji Type Boys.”

The first episode has Denji talk about his dreams a lot. He wants to eat good food with Pochita as well as find a girlfriend. Not only does he get good food in the opening of episode two, but he gets to enjoy it with a pretty girl too.

Denji asks what kind of boys Makima likes and she replies with this line about Denji-type boys. It seems like she is flirting back at this point, but fans that have read further in the manga will know exactly what she was talking about.

5 “The Better You Understand Your Partner, The Better You Feel.”

Denji’s goal for becoming a Devil Hunter early on is to touch a woman. He finally gets this opportunity in episode five wherein he feels up Power as a reward for rescuing Meowy.

Afterward, he asks out loud to himself, “That’s it?” Later in the episode, Makima senses that something is wrong with Denji as he seems out of it. She says the solution to his problem is to be intimate with someone he is close to as that should change things. Makima then promises Denji he can do anything he wants with her as long as he kills the Gun Devil which perks Denji right up.

4 “If You Manage To Outdrink Me Then I’ll Tell You.”

By episode seven, it’s clear that Makima is not the sweet girl that rescued Denji at the start of Chainsaw Man. She knows more than she lets on and Aki is starting to realize that. He has a plan to ask Makima directly while they go out for drinks, hoping she will spill the beans if she gets drunk.

That’s when she proposes this drinking contest. Unfortunately, Aki loses but he should have seen this one coming as Makima was brimming with confidence when she proposed the idea. Is it even possible for her to get drunk? If not, what kind of human is she?

3 “Life Comes In A Wide Variety Of Flavors.”

Aki losing to Makima is a great sequence in episode seven of Chainsaw Man but he isn’t the only one that takes the drinking challenge. Himeno jumps in as well, gets super buzzed, and starts to make out with Denji. He likes it at first up until Himeno pukes in his mouth.

He’s saddened his first kiss was interrupted by puke, soiling the memory. In episode eight there is a flashback where Makima is shown comforting Denji shortly after this. She says this line about flavors and gives Denji a cola-flavored sucker to get the taste out of his mouth.

2 “It Goes Without Saying But Lunch Is Canceled.”

Episode nine should cement the idea in the audience’s heads that something is wrong with Makima. She gets shot in episode eight and is revived, somehow, in episode nine. After killing the mob offscreen, she gets off the train covered in blood and says this line to Tendo and Kurose.

It might be meant as a joke, but she delivers it in the most deadpan way possible, which does make it funny. Tendo and Kurose don’t question it, but the audience must be screaming at this point. How did Makima come back from the dead, and why is she so casual about it?

1 “I’m Not At Liberty To Discuss Public Safety Intel With Private Citizens.”

Madoka, another Devil Hunter agent, shows up at the train station not long after this scene on the train in episode nine of Chainsaw Man. He comes to explain that Makima is now in charge of everything as the special branches have all folded into one. He also resigns his position with the bureau but wants to ask how much Makima knew about the attack before he goes.

That’s when she smiles and says this line about not being able to share information. She also thanks Madoka for his service, but the sentiment reads a bit hollow because she knows people like him are starting to suspect something is up with her.
